The United States government on Thursday declared a national health emergency over the monkeypox outbreak, at a time when nearly 7,000 cases have been recorded in the country.

With the initiative, authorities hope to take the response to the disease “to the next level,” the health minister said. Xavier Becerra. The decision enables the federal government to provide more funds to deal with the wave of infections.

Agencies can initiate the development of new vaccines and treatments and hire new professionals.

“We encourage all Americans to take monkeypox seriously and take responsibility to help us deal with this virus,” the health secretary added in a call with reporters.
