Castilla-La Mancha will buy 626,000 doses of flu and meningococcal vaccines

Castilla-La Mancha adquirirá 626.000 dosis de vacunas contra la gripe y el meningococos

The government of Castile-La Mancha has approved two investments totaling almost 8.4 million euros for the purchase of 600,000 doses of the seasonal influenza vaccine and another 26,000 doses of the meningococcal conjugate vaccine for vaccinating adolescents.

The Minister for Equality and Spokesperson, Blanca Fernández, has reported this, incorporating these two agreements of the Governing Council, which took place today, in the regional executive’s preventive policy.

Regarding the first topic, the spokeswoman highlighted that the government chaired by Emiliano García-Page will purchase 600,000 doses of vaccine against seasonal flu for the 2022-2023 campaign with an investment of 7.5 million euros.

Blanca Fernández has indicated that the flu is a public health problem, all the more so when it coexists with the Covid-19 pandemic in its various variants. For this reason, she believes that “it is very important that this flu campaign is as intense as the previous two. For this reason we have stocked ourselves with 600,000 vaccines, which to our knowledge is enough to reach the great data of past campaigns, considering that these two autumn/winter respiratory infections add up and can cause not only health problems but problems as well and tensions in the healthcare system”.

In this sense, the equality minister and spokeswoman recalled that “88.5 percent of people over 60 years old were vaccinated against the flu in the last campaign and the aim is to reach at least these dates”.

Basically, the aim of flu vaccination is to protect people who are at higher risk of complications if they contract the virus, such as: B. People over 65 years old, older people in social health centers and patients with chronic diseases. In addition, it is recommended to vaccinate people who provide essential services to the community by virtue of their job and people who are exposed to avian or swine viruses.

For this reason, Blanca Fernández has launched an awareness message, since “experience shows that adequate autumn flu prevention can help reduce the impact on healthcare pressures and possible complications in the most vulnerable population”.

Vaccination against meningococci

Similarly, the Minister for Equality and Spokesman has reported the purchase by the Government of Castilla-La Mancha of 26,000 doses of conjugate vaccine against meningococci, specifically of serogroups A, C, W and Y, in this case intended for adolescents and representing a Amount of 873,392 euros.

Meningitis, or invasive meningococcal disease, is a public health concern because it occurs mainly in children and causes significant sequelae and high mortality.

In conclusion, Blanca Fernández assured that “vaccination programs are currently a powerful and effective tool for the prevention of infectious diseases” and thanks to them “it is possible to contribute to the fight against certain communicable diseases and to achieve remarkable improvements in the health of the population “.
